Frederick Jay Rubin (Rick Rubin) was born in Long Beach, New York on March 10, 1963 to Michael and Linda. He studied at Long Beach High School and started the band The Pricks with the help of a teacher. Rubin founded Def Jam Records using his school’s four-track recorder. In 1982, one of his Hose band’s tracks became Def Jam’s first release. He released JJ Cool J’s “I Need a Beat” with Russell Simmons and T La Rock’s “It’s Yours” with DJ Jazzy Jay.

Rubin famous projects at Def Jam Records include “Electric”, “Tougher Than Leather” and “Reign in Blood”. Rubin and Simmons split in 1988, and he moved to Los Angeles where he started Def American Records.

He renamed Def American Recordings to American Recordings and his first project was Jonny Cash’s album “American Recordings” in 1994. Cash’s album “The Man Comes Around” won a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 2003. He won the 2006 Producer of the Year Grammy for his work on the album “Stadium Arcadium”. He has produced other albums include Mick Jagger’s “Wandering Spirit”, Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers”, Donovan’s “Sutras”, Metallica’s “Death Magnetic” and Shakira’s album project “Fijacion Oral Vol. 1.” Rubin remained the co-head of Columbia Records from 2007 to 2012. After that he revived his label American Recordings as an imprint through Republic Records.
